New Delhi: Amid the ongoing controversy over Kashi Vishwanath, Mathura, Taj Mahal and Qutub Minar, another petition has been filed in the Supreme Court against the Places of Worship Act 1991. The petition said that the law blatantly violates the principles of secularism and rule of law. It is also illegal on civil rights.
The petition has been filed on behalf of Swami JitendraNath Saraswati. The petition said that between 1192 and 1947, foreign invaders had demolished hundreds of religious places of Hindu, Sikh, Jain and Buddhists. There is information and evidence of this in history. But this law prohibits the right to worship, serve and worship the gods and goddesses in such places from approaching the court.
What is the Places of Preference Act?
In 1990, there was an agitation over the Ram temple in Ayodhya. At that time, the present Narasimha Rao government had brought the Places of Worship Act, 1991 on July 11, 1991 in view of the growing controversy over different religious places across the country. According to this Act, the religious place which was in the state of August 15, 1947 and the community it belonged to will remain the same in the future. But the Ayodhya case was in the High Court at that time, so it was kept out of this law.
