Security beefed up in Chennai ahead of PM Modi's visit

CHENNAI: Tight security has been put in place for the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is reaching Chennai today for inaugurating and laying foundation stones for a number of projects.

The Greater Chennai Police Force has deployed around 22,000 officers. At 5.45 p.m., the event will take place at Chennai's Jawaharlal Nehru indoor stadium.

This is the Prime Minister's first visit to Chennai since M.K. Stalin became Tamil Nadu's Chief Minister.
The Chennai city traffic police have issued a public notice that between 3 p.m. and 8 p.m., there will be traffic restrictions in the city from EVR salai and Dasprakash to the Chennai medical college junction.

In the state, the Prime Minister will lay the foundation stone for 11 projects totalling Rs 31,400 crore. This comprises the laying of foundation stones for five roadways and one railway project totalling 408.77 kilometres. The PM will also be launching a gas pipeline project. The Prime Minister will also dedicate 1,152 residences built at a cost of Rs 116 crore under the Light House project of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban.
