COLOMBO: Sri Lanka's Defence Ministry has announced the tightening in the security across the island nation, following accusations in Indian media that former members of the now-defunct Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) terrorist group are plotting assaults on May 18 to commemorate the Tamil Genocide.

The Sri Lankan Tamils commemorate the Tamil Genocide Remembrance Day, also known as Mullivaikkal Remembrance Day, on May 18, the date on which the island nation's over 25-year-old Civil War came to an end in 2009 with the assassination of LTTE commander Velupillai Prabhakaran.

"After inquiring about the information, Indian intelligence agencies told Sri Lanka that the information was given out as general information, adding that investigations will be carried out in this regard and action will be taken to inform Sri Lanka about it," the Defence Ministry said in response to a report published in India's 'The Hindu' newspaper on May 13. The Ministry stated that the information received by intelligence and security forces in connection with national security will be thoroughly analysed, and all necessary steps will be taken to reinforce security while informing the relevant security forces.

While Sri Lanka is experiencing its greatest economic crisis since independence in 1948, intelligence agencies have warned that LTTE militants are banding together to undertake attacks on the island nation.
