Sensex adds 163 points to end above 60,000 for the first time, Nifty settles at 17,853

A great day for equity markets in India with the BSE benchmark Sensex crossing and closing above the 60,000 mark for the first time.  The Sensex after  having  toucheda record high of 60,333 before closing, finally  settled 163.11 points higher at 60,048.47. Similarly, the NSE benchmark Nifty, closed 30.25 points higher at 17,853.20 after making an all-time high of 17,947.65.

IT, auto and realty stocks added strength to the benchmark. Nifty IT, the IT sub-index of NSE ended 0.76 percent higher as record earnings from Accenture boosted hopes for a strong Q2 show from Indian IT companies. 

Among Nifty stocks, Asian Paints was the top gainer, followed by Eicher Motors and HCL Tech, which rose up to 2.5 percent. HDFC Bank, Bharti Airtel, Grasim, Infosys, ICICI Bank, HDFC, Wipro, SBI Life Insurance, Bajaj Auto, Kotak Mahindra Bank, HDFC Life were the other gainers in the Nifty. Meanwhile, Tata Steel was the biggest loser in the Nifty followed by JSW Steel and SBI, which fell upto 2.7 percent. Divis Labs, Axis Bank, Shree Cements, ITC, Tata Consumer Products, NTPC, Bajaj Finance, Adani Ports, HUL were the other losers in the Nifty. Broader markets also underperformed benchmark indices today; the BSE Midcap index declined 1.16 percent while the BSE Smallcap index shed 0.30 percent.
