Sensex closed little lower, Nifty Settles above 15,200; Infosys, Asian Paints lead

Indian share market closed with minor gains in a volatile trade on May 25. Selling pressure in financials wiped out early gains. Nifty slipped in the negative territory but managed to close above 15,200.

During the day, Sensex rose as much as 309 points and the Nifty 50 index touched an intraday high of 15,294. However, due to selling pressure in banking and financial services shares, the benchmarks wiped out entire intraday gains to close on a flat note. The Sensex finally closed14 points lower at 50,637 and the Nifty 50 index advanced 11 points to close at 15,208.

Asian Paints, Titan Company, Eicher Motors, JSW Steel and Britannia Industries were among the top gainers on the Nifty, while losers included HDFC Bank, HDFC Life, Reliance Industries, Axis Bank and Coal India.

Sectorally, the Nifty Media index's 3.2 percent gain followed by the Nifty IT, FMCG, Metal, Pharma and Realty indexes also rose between 0.4 to 1 percent. On the other hand, Nifty Bank, PSU Bank, Private Bank and Financial Services indices ended lower.

Mid- and small-cap shares witnessed mild selling pressure as Nifty Midcap 100 index rose 0.2 percent and the Nifty Smallcap 100 index rose 0.1 percent
