Sensex crashes 1,747-pts, Nifty below 16,850

The Indian stock market closed in the deep negative terrain today as global markets fell over fears of a Russian invasion of Ukraine. The Sensex sank 1,747 points to 56,405 and the Nifty dropped 531 points to 16,842.

The biggest Sensex losers were Tata Steel, HDFC, SBI, ICICI Bank, IndusInd Bank, and Kotak Bank, which fell up to 5.49 percent.

TCS was the Sensex's only loser today, rising 1.05 percent. The BSE midcap and smallcap indices both dropped 852 and 1,190 points, respectively. The market capitalization of BSE-listed companies fell to Rs 255.42 lakh crore, down from Rs 263.89 lakh crore the previous day. On the BSE, market breadth was negative, with 567 stocks finishing down versus 2,984 stocks closing lower. There were 119 shares that remained unchanged.

The top sectoral losers were banking, capital goods, consumer durables, and metal stocks, with the BSE bankex, BSE capital goods, BSE consumer durables, and BSE metals indexes down 1,872 points, 1016 points, 1143 points, and 1064 points, respectively. The BSE sectoral indices all finished in the red.
