The equity benchmarks notched fresh record highs on Friday with Sensex moving above its important psychological level of 55,000 and Nifty 50 index scaled 16,500. The rally was led by heavy buying interest in Reliance Industries, TCS, HDFC Bank, Infosys, HDFC and Larsen & Toubro.

The Sensex jumped as much as 644 points in intra-day trading to hit a record high of 55,487.79 while the Nifty 50 index touched an all-time high of 16,543.60. At the closing bell the sensed scored 593 points at 55437, while the Nifty finished 165 points at 16529 marks. Top gainers on the Nifty in today's landmark session were stocks like TCS, Tata Consumer Products, HCL, Tata Steel and Larsen and Toubro, while the set of losers include Eicher Motors, Dr Reddys, Cipla, Power Grid and Britannia.

Nifty sectoral indices traded mixed with Nifty IT leading the most gains, while sectoral losers in an otherwise strong market were auto, realty and pharma segment. Individually, TCS stock rallied with gains of over 3 percent while its market valuation at the close of the session stood at Rs. 12,81,129 crore.
