Sensex Ends Lower By 440-pts, Nifty below 14940

Indian stock markets closed lower for the second straight day led by state-run lenders and metal stocks. The BSE Sensex ended 440 points lower at 50,045 while the NSE Nifty 50 index ended 142 points lower at 14,938. On weekly basis, both Sensex and Nifty ended with gains for the week after two successive weeks of losses.

GAIL India, ONGC, Maruti Suzuki, Hero Motocorp and Kotak Mahindra were among the top gainers, while losers include IndusInd Bank, Tata Motors, Wipro, Hindalco and UPL. Shares of  Vodafone Idea declined as much as 4 percent after there are reports that the company's fund-raising plan is facing a hurdle.

Today’s losses were led by the PSU Bank index, which declined 4 percent while the Nifty Metal index declined 2.7 percent in today's session. The Nifty Bank index ended 1.6 percent lower as did the Nifty I.T. index which declined a similar quantum.

Other sectoral losers were the Nifty Pharma index which fell 1.3 percent while the Media index gave up gains and ended 0.9 percent lower while the Nifty Auto index declined 1 percent.

Crude Oil prices also increased over USD 1 per barrel as the OPEC decided not to increase supply in April. Brent crude futures for May rose to as high as $68 a barrel on Friday.
