Sensex falls 746 Pts at 48,878; Nifty Below 14,375

Equity benchmark Sensex slipped 746 points to close at 48,878.54 on Friday, tracking losses in index heavyweight Reliance, Housing Development Finance, HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank amid a weak trend in global markets.  The BSE index ended 746.22 points or 1.50 pc lower at 48,878.54.  This was the biggest single-day fall for the benchmarks in a month. This is also the third instance in the last one week when the Nifty has declined by 1 pc or more.

Likewise, the NSE Nifty 50 tumbled 218.45 points or 1.5 pc to 14,371.90. Axis Bank was the top loser in the Sensex pack, falling over 4 pc, followed by Asian Paints, State bank of India, IndusInd Bank, ICICI Bank, Bajaj Finance, HDFC and Reliance Industries. On the other hand, Bajaj Auto, Hindustan Unilever, UltraTech Cement, Tata Consultancy SERvice (TCS), Bajaj Finserv and Infosys were the gainers.

Among the sectoral indices, the Nifty Bank fell over 1,000 points in today's session, falling to the lowest in nearly a month. The PSU Bank index too declined over 3pc in today's session.

The Nifty Metal index was the top sectoral laggard in today's session, ending 3.9pc lower. The Nifty Realty index declined 2.8pc.

The Nifty Auto index bucked the trend courtesy gains in two-wheeler majors Bajaj Auto and Hero MotoCorp. The index ended 1.4pc higher. Broader markets declined, but the weightage was lesser as compared to the benchmarks. The Nifty Midcap index fell 1.2pc while the smallcap index declined 0.6pc at the end of trading.

According to Stock exchange data, Foreign institutional investors remained net buyers in the capital market as they purchased shares worth Rs 1,614.66 crore today.
