Market Closing Updates: On Thursday,  benchmark indices closed lower, snapping a three-day winning streak, as investors booked profits following a recent rise and sluggish global cues.

The  BSE Sensex index fell 770 points, or 1.3 percent, to close at 58,788, while the NSE Nifty index fell 220 points to 17,560. Both indices had hit lows of 58,654 and 17,511, respectively, during the day.

HDFC, the housing mortgage lender, was the largest loser today, closing 3.5 percent lower. After the company announced an 11 percent increase in net profit to Rs 3,261 crore in the October–December period of FY22, topping Street estimates, investors booked profits in the shares. SBI Life, Infosys, L&T, Grasim, Bajaj twins, Kotak Bank, IndusInd Bank, and ONGC were the top laggards, with shares down by 2 percent to 3 percent.

On the bright side, Hero MotoCorp and Bajaj Auto both gained 2 percent, while Maruti Suzuki, ITC, Titan, Divis Labs, SBI, and Asian Paints all gained 1 percent.

All of the major indices closed in the red, led by the Nifty IT index (down 2 percent), and the Nifty Realty index (down 1.7 per cent). The Nifty Auto index was the only one to gain ground, rising 0.4 percent.
