Sensex, Nifty add Gains For Fourth Day; Auto Stocks lead

Market Closing Updates: On Monday, stocks rose for a fourth straight day as strong purchasing in the auto, metals, finance, and Reliance Industries sectors boosted mood. The NSE Nifty50 crossed back over the 17,300-point threshold to settle at 17,340, up 182 points or 1%, while the BSE Sensex increased by 545 points, or 0.95 percent, to end at 58,116.

Mahindra and Mahindara (M&M), Reliance, Maruti Suzuki, Bharti Airtel, Power Grid, Kotak Bank, Ultratech Cement, ITC, NTPC, SBI, Axis Bank, and Titan were the top gainers on the Sensex. Sun Pharma, HUL, Nestle, TCS, HDFC, and Asian Paints were the laggards on the negative side, falling up to 2.5%.

The BSE MidCap and SmallCap indices both saw gains of 1.5% in the overall market. Sector-wise, the Nifty Auto index increased by 3.3%, the Nifty PSB and Metal indices each by 1.5%. The only index that fell, by 0.08 percent, was the Nifty Pharma index.  2,299 shares on the BSE climbed while 1,161 fell, resulting in positive total market breadth.
Meanwhile, shares of Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC), the largest domestic financial investor and insurer in the nation, increased 0.80% to close at Rs. 683.25.

Sun Pharma, Hindustan Unilever, IndusInd Bank, Nestle India, Asian Paints, and TCS, in contrast, all reported negative financial results.

As investors watched yet another round of corporate reports, European markets were subdued on Monday to start the new month. By mid-morning, the pan-European Stoxx 600 was up 1.9% while still barely over its flat line.
