Sensex, Nifty closed flat; Metals stocks shimmer

Indian benchmark indices gave up gains from the early part of the trading day to end little changed as private banking stocks underperformed. At close, the BSE Sensex ended 50 points lower at 52,104 while the NSE Nifty 50 index ended unchanged from Monday's closing at 15,313.

PowerGrid,  NTPC, ONGC Kotak Mahindra Bank, Maruti Suzuki, and Reliance Industries, up between 1 to 6 percent, were the top gainers on the Sensex while Tata Steel, Hindalco, and Adani Ports were the additional gainers on the Nifty index. On the downside, Axis Bank, ICICI Bank, Infosys, Eicher Motors, SBI, HUL, and TCS nursed losses on these indices.

On the sectoral front, the Nifty IT index turned out to be the worst performer, down 1.6 percent at close. The Nifty Bank index, down 0.8 percent and the Nifty Private Bank and FMCG indices down 0.7 percent each were the other losers. On the other hand, the Nifty Metal index ended about 3 percent higher today.

Metal stocks were the biggest outperformers in today's session with the Metal index ending with gains of 2.9 percent. State-run banks were the other outperformers with the PSU Bank index ending 1.6 percent higher.

I.T. stocks were the biggest laggards in today's session, with the Nifty I.T. index ending with cuts of 1.5 percent. Broader Markets outperformed in today's session. The Nifty Midcap index gained 0.4percent while the Small-cap index ended 0.1percent higher.
