Stock market closing Updates: Benchmark indices lost ground after starting strong on Thursday, falling for a second straight day. The BSE Sensex lost 810 points from the top of the day to a low of 59,866 during the course of the day. The stock subsequently recovered some of the losses to close at 59,934, down 413 points or 0.68 percent, at the end of the day.

The NSE Nifty touched a low of 17,861, but completed the day at 17,877, down 126 points or 0.73 percent.
The Nifty lost ground today, with Hindalco, Infosys, Cipla, Tech M, Tata Steel, Divis Labs, and Apollo Hospitals topping the list of losers. IT, pharmaceutical, and several metal stocks all ended in the red. Hero MotoCorp, Bajaj Finserv, Bajaj Auto, Titan, HDFC Life, IndusInd Bank, and Bajaj Finance were other losses.

On the Upside, stocks in the banking and car industries soared, with gains of up to 2.6% recorded by Maruti Suzuki, Eicher Motors, HDFC, SBI, ICICI Bank, and Mahindra and Mahindra. Other winners included Adani Ports, NTPC, PowerGrid, Grasim, and Coal India.

The BSE MidCap and SmallCap indices saw gains of 0.3 percent and 0.6 percent, respectively, in the broader markets.

Indian Rupee Versus US Dollar: On Thursday, the rupee lost 21 paise to conclude the day at 79.73 against the US dollar due to a strong USD and a downward trend in domestic stocks.

The local currency's opening rate on the interbank foreign exchange market was 79.53 per dollar. It lingered between 79.44 and 79.73 during the session. After settling at 79.73, the domestic currency fell 21 paise from its previous finish of 79.52.

The dollar index, which measures the value of the dollar against a basket of six different currencies, was down 0.09 percent at 109.56 at the time.

Meanwhile, Brent crude futures, the global oil benchmark, fell by 0.96 percent to USD 93.20 per barrel.
