Sensex, Nifty End Flat With A Negative Bias, Spicejet flies 1 pc

Swinging between gains and losses, Indian equities on Wednesday's session ended with modest losses for the second straight session. The BSE Sensex ended 20 points lower at 51,309 while the NSE Nifty 50 ended little (2.80 pts) changed at 15,106.   SBI Life Insurance, Bajaj Finserv, Cipla, M&M and HDFC Life were among the top gainers, while losers include Eicher Motors, Bharti Airtel, HDFC Bank, Tata Steel and Britannia.

Shares in Spicejet ended at Rs. 87.9, over 1 per cent higher on the NSE, after the company reported December quarter results with a net loss of Rs. 67 crore versus Rs. 78 crore profit Year on year.

Among the sectoral indices, the Realty index was the top performing sectoral index in today's session, ending with gains of 1.6 per cent. The Auto index ended 1per cent higher while the Nifty Pharma index ended with gains of 0.7 per cent.

The Nifty Bank index was the laggard in today's session, ending 0.7per cent lower while other sectoral indices ended little changed. Broader markets outperformed in today's session. The Nifty Midcap index gained 0.8per cent while the Smallcap index rose 0.7 per cent at the close of trade.

Crude Oil extended its rally for a ninth day on Wednesday, supported by producer supply cuts and hopes that vaccine rollouts will drive a recovery in demand. Brent crude was up by 28 cents at USD 61.37 after touching a 13-month high of $61.49 earlier in the session. U.S. crude was up 21 cents to USD58.57.
