Indian equity markets, after fluctuating with gains and losses,  finally ended higher for the sixth consecutive session, not before registering another record high. The  BSE Sensex ended 133 points higher at 47,746 while the NSE Nifty 50 index, ended 49 points higher at 13,981. The outperformers in today's session were auto and metal stocks. Both the indices ended with gains of 1.3 percent each.

UltraTech, Grasim and Shree Cement, Bajaj Finance, and Eicher Motors were the top five gainers on the Nifty, while IndusInd Bank, Axis Bank, Sun pharma SBI and Bharti Airtel were major losers.

The Nifty Bank had a very volatile session. The index traded in a 500 point range and ended little changed at 31,303. Most of the other sectoral indices reversed from their respective intraday lows. The PSU Bank index, down 1.1 percent at one point ended 0.2 percent lower, as did the Nifty Pharma index, which declined by a similar quantum. 1,002 stocks on the NSE ended with gains while 859 stocks declined.
