Sensex sparkles 380 points, Top stock to watch today

Indian stock benchmark indices on Wednesday gained amid investor's optimism that the economy will rebound strongly from the world's worst Covid-19 outbreak.

AT close, the BSE Sensex gained 380 points to 51,017.52, its highest close since March 10. NSE’s Nifty 50 ended 93 points higher at 15,301.45. The stock benchmark has risen about 9 percent so far this year, compared to a 3 percent rise in the regional benchmark MSCI Asia Pacific Index.

Bajaj Finserv was top Nifty gainer, followed by Bajaj Finance, Infosys, Grasim Industries, Wipro, UPL, HDFC, Maruti Suzuki, Larsen & Toubro, Tech Mahindra and Mahindra & Mahindra also rose 1.5-3 percent.

On the downside, Power Grid, Hindalco, Tata Steel, NTPC, Tata Consumer Products, Coal India, ONGC, Bharat Petroleum and Adani Ports were among the losers. The overall market breadth was extremely positive as 1,953 shares ended lower while 1,183 closed higher on the BSE.

Grasim Industries' share price gained over 2 percent after the Aditya Birla Group firm reported a 13.3 percent rise in its consolidated net profit to Rs 2,616.64 crore for the fourth quarter ended March 31.

Mid- and small-cap shares ended on a mixed note as Nifty Midcap 100 index rose 0.1 percent and the Nifty Smallcap 100 index rose 0.6 percent.
