Sensex sparkles 397 points; Nifty reach above 15,800

Indian share market benchmark index Sensex rallied over 397 points on Tuesday, tracking gains in index majors ICICI Bank, HDFC (Housing), HDFC Bank and Reliance Industries amid positive domestic as well as global cues. At close, the 30-share BSE index ended 397.04 points or 0.76 percent higher at 52,769.73, and the broader NSE Nifty advanced 119.75 points or 0.76 percent to 15,812.35.

ICICI Bank was the top gainer in the Sensex pack, rising 3 percent, followed by HDFC, Axis Bank, Sun Pharma, NTPC and Mahindra and Mahindra. On the other hand, HCL Tech, Dr Reddy’s, Maruti Suzuki and Tech Mahindra were among the laggards.

Sectorally Nifty Bank Index gained over 1 percent gain. Nifty Financial Services, PSU Bank, Private Bank and Nifty Pharma indices also rose between 0.7 to 1.4 percent. ICICI Bank was top Nifty gainer, the stock rose nearly 3 percent to close at Rs665. HDFC, Grasim Industries, Axis Bank, Sun Pharma, SBI Life, ONGC, NTPC and HDFC Life also rose between 1,5-2.7 percent in the Nifty. On the downside, IT shares witnessed selling pressure a day ahead of earnings of IT major Infosys. Media and FMCG shares also faced a mild selling pressure.
