New Delhi: A PIL has been filed in the Delhi High Court on Monday seeking directions to officials to construct separate toilets for transgenders. The petition said separate toilets are necessary for them so that they do not fall prey to sexual assault and harassment. The next hearing on this will now be held on September 13.

The Supreme Court had in 2014 ordered that separate toilets should be constructed for transgenders, but so far such toilets have been constructed only in cities like Mysore, Bhopal, and Nagpur. In the Varanasi district of UP, the state government has given a big gift to transgenders under which the administration has constructed the state's first transgender toilet in the Kamakhya area of Varanasi to ensure participation of transgenders in cleaning the city. This is the first transgender toilet in Uttar Pradesh.

A bench of Justices DN Patel and Jyoti Singh has sent notices to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Government of Delhi, New Delhi Municipal Council, East Delhi Municipal Corporation, South and North Delhi Municipal Corporation on the petition. All of them have been directed to respond to the notice before September 13.
