Washington: America's top lawn tennis player and 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams has indicated her retirement on Tuesday, saying that the countdown has also started. Williams said on Instagram- There comes a time in life when we have to decide to move in a different direction. It's always hard times when you love something so much. Don't ask how much I enjoy tennis, but now the countdown has also begun. I've had to focus on being a mother, on my spiritual goals and finally on discovering a different, but just exciting Serena. I'm going to enjoy these next few weeks.

The American legend did not play tennis for a long time due to injury before making his singles return to Wimbledon in June, after which there has been speculation about his retirement. She says she will play at the US Open later this month, where she has also won six of her major singles titles. Williams won her last Grand Slam title at the 2017 Australian Open when she was 8 weeks pregnant with her daughter Olympia.

Williams registered her first singles win in 14 months on Monday, beating Spain's Nuria Parijas Diaz to reach the second round at the National Bank Open in Toronto. She is the highest title-winning woman in the Open era. Williams, who turns 41 next month, has 73 career singles titles and 23 career doubles titles to her name.
