Champion Serena Williams, who returned to the court after 6 months during the Corona transition, has kept her form as before. On Thursday, she defeated elder sister Venus Williams 3-6 6-3 6-4 in the second round of the WTA Top Seed Open. In 31 matches between the two sisters, Serena won for 19 times.
Serena will now face American Wildcard entry Shelby Rogers, who defeated Canadian qualifier Leylah Annie Fernandez 6-2, 7-5. Jill Teichmann also reached the quarterfinals by winning 6–2, 6–2 over Yulia Putintseva and now face Cici Bellis, who defeated Jessica Pegula 6–3, 6–2.
There was a previous match between Serena and Venus at the US Open in 2018. Then Serena defeated Venus 6–1, 6–2 in the third round of the tournament. Serena has won ten out of the twelve matches between the two. After this spectacular victory, Serena said that "It was definitely a win for me. This will boost my confidence. I have not played much since becoming a mother. It was definitely a game for me. This will help me prepare for the US Open".
