Consumer Affairs Minister Ram Vilas Paswan on Wednesday said people got caught by unfair service charge on food and drinks at the hotels and they don’t need to pay it. He added that, there is no such law to take action against hotels/restaurants. Consumer have full right not to pay service charge and can decide not to eat there if they are informed in advanced about it, through the menu card itself.

In future if such case occurs it would be addressed effectively as a provision has been made in the new 'Consumer Protection Bill' to set up a regulator CCPA, says Paswan. The law likely to see the passage in the forthcoming Budget session of Parliament.

Paswan also said that the consumer must be informed about service charge in the menu card and not in the bill. He also argued that there is no need to take service charge on each food item. He further argued that, hotels and restaurants should not charge even for room service.
