Jakarta: 7 people died due to floods in Indonesia and the other 3 are said to be missing. Local officials reported on Monday that a bridge over the river was crowded with heavy people, which washed away the floodwaters. According to the news agency Effe, the incident was caused by heavy rains in Kaur district of Bengkulu province.

Agus Wibobo, a spokesman for Indonesia's National Disaster Management Authority (BNPB), said, "Volunteers are engaged in work to search for the missing victims and emergency checkpoints have been established." Several bodies were found several kilometers away from the debris of the bridge, which were completely submerged in the river. These bodies can be seen in photographs released by BNPB. The Indonesian Meteorological Agency (BMKG) on Monday issued warnings for heavy rains in many parts of the archipelago, including Bengkulu, where strong winds and storms were feared. There is a possibility of bad weather throughout the week in the area.

Due to torrential rains in the South East Asian country at least 66 people died in the Jakarta metropolitan region in late December and early January, while thousands have to leave their homes and take shelter in safe places. The Jakarta Police has so far spoken of destroying at least 16 mosques.
