GUWAHATI: Police in Assam's Goalpara district have gunned down three dacoits in an encounter on Friday (April 1). The names of the slain dacoits have been given as Shah Jahan, Nazmul and Sujal. The three professionals are said to be criminals against whom several cases have been registered in different police stations. The encounter was confirmed by the Additional Superintendent of Police, Goalpara district, Mrinal Deka.  

Deka said, "We had received information about the criminals hiding in the truck and running away. We wanted to stop them during the blockade. They tried to escape by breaking the siege and also firing at the police force. In retaliation, all three criminals were killed. The three criminals killed were involved in several crimes like murder and kidnapping.'' According to media reports, the encounter took place around 8.30 pm. The encounter took place in the Alok Bazar area of Agiya in Goalpara. The vehicle in which the three suspects were riding was loaded with betel nut. Police had shot the robbers' vehicles in the tyres to stop them. The three suspects injured in the encounter were taken to the Civil Hospital in Goalpara, where the doctors declared them brought dead.

In another incident, a former terrorist of the NLFB outfit was killed in Kokrajhar district while trying to escape from police custody. The criminal, identified as Sanjula, was arrested by the police on Thursday (March 31). He is said to be the chief of a gang of around 10 to 15 bandits. The police had taken the loot with them to the forests of Ultapani to recover the loot. During this time, with a revolver hidden with the goods, he opened fire on the police and tried to escape from the spot. Sanjula was also shot in retaliation. He was taken to a local hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead. Police recovered gold, Rs 1 lakh cash and a 7.65mm pistol and cartridges from the spot.
