New Delhi: Former Union Minister Shakeel Ahmed today met Sonia Gandhi, the interim president of the Congress Party. It is being told that Shakeel Ahmed can return to Congress. Ahmed was suspended from the party after contesting as an independent against the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) candidate in the Lok Sabha elections.

Shakeel Ahmed, who contested as an independent from Madhubani parliamentary seat of Bihar, was expelled from the party for 6 years by the Congress. According to the seat-sharing formula of the Mahagathbandhan, Madhubani seat went to the Vikas Insan Party (VIP). Shakeel Ahmed went against the party's decision to enter the electoral battle as an independent candidate.

Shakeel Ahmed has been an MP from Madhubani parliamentary seat in the years 1998 and 2004. He also served as MLA in 1985, 1990 and 2000. Ahmed has also been the Health Minister in the Bihar government headed by Rabri Devi. He then took charge as Minister of State for Communications, IT and Home in the Manmohan Singh-led government in 2004. After becoming the Congress President, Sonia Gandhi is constantly meeting leaders who were either expelled from the Congress or left the party due to resentment.
