Shanghai: Veteran British tennis player Andy Murray suffered a stiff defeat at the Shanghai Masters. He was defeated by Fabio Fognini of Italy, ranked 12th in the world rankings. The match which lasted more than three hours was won by Fognini 7-6, 2-6, 7-6. There was also a heated debate between the two players amidst stiff competition in the match. British player Murray underwent his hip operation a year ago and is now engaged in regaining fitness and rhythm.

The three-time Grand Slam winner is currently ranked number 289 in the world rankings, while he was 503rd a week ago. Former champion and British player Murray will return to the Grand Slam tournament from the Australian Open next year. Murray was confirmed to play on Tuesday.
