New Delhi: A Delhi court on Tuesday framed sedition and other charges against former Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student Sharjeel Imam for his alleged inflammatory speeches made by him during the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protest in Delhi's Jamia area in December 2019 and at UP's Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) in January 2020. However, Sharjeel Imam has said that he will face trial, declaring himself innocent.

Additional Sessions Judge Amitabh Rawat framed charges against Sharjeel Imam under Sections  124A of sedition in the IPC as well as 153A, 153B, 505 and 13 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). The court had on January 24, 2022, ordered framing of charges. The court had turned down Sharjeel's regular bail plea. The court has fixed March 26, 2022, for further hearing of the case.   Sharjeel Imam, who was one of the organizers of the December 2019 Shaheen Bagh protest, was arrested by the Delhi Police from Jehanabad in Bihar in 2020.

What was the statement of Sharjeel Imam:-

Although Sharjeel Imam's speech is quite long, but here we are putting that part in front of the readers, which says provocative and damaging the integrity of the country. At the anti-CAA programme, Sharjeel had said, "It is time for us to speak to non-Muslims that if they are our sympathizers, then stand on our terms." If they don't stand on our terms, they're not our sympathizers. If we have 5 lakh people organized by us, we can permanently cut off the North-East from Hindustan. If not permanently, assam can be cut off from Hindustan for at least one-and-a-half months. Pour so much pus on the tracks, on the road that it took a month to remove them. If you want to go, go by the Air Force. You can also watch the video on YouTube.
