Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has expressed support for the recent revelations about widespread sexual harassment in Kerala's film industry, known as Mollywood. Tharoor praised the exposure of these issues and the legal actions that have followed, but he emphasized that the root problem lies in the broader societal attitudes toward gender equality.

Tharoor, representing Thiruvananthapuram, highlighted that the discussion around sexual assault has gained momentum since high-profile cases such as the 2012 Nirbhaya incident and the 2024 RG Kar Hospital rape and murder. He stressed that these issues are not new, but they are now being openly addressed.

"Something is seriously wrong with Indian men if we can't tackle these problems effectively," Tharoor stated. "There is a need for systematic change rather than just reacting to each tragedy. Shock and outrage are not enough; we need ongoing, substantial reform."

Tharoor's remarks come as Kerala's film industry is rocked by the release of the Hema committee report on sexual harassment. This report has led to significant upheaval, with several high-profile figures resigning from their positions.

"I'm proud that Kerala is leading the charge in addressing these issues," Tharoor added. "It’s important that we confront these problems head-on and not shy away from the truth."

The scandal has prompted several women to come forward with allegations, some naming their harassers while others share their stories anonymously. This surge in complaints has resulted in prominent figures in Mollywood stepping down. Director Ranjith has resigned as Chairman of the Chalachitra Academy, and actor Siddique has left his role as general secretary of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA), a key organization in the industry.
