MUMBAI: With the Eknath Shinde government and Maha Vikas Aghadi candidates filing their nominations here on Saturday, the stage is set for the first big struggle, the election of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly Speaker, to be held on Sunday.

Rahul Narwekar of the Bharatiya Janata Party fielded for the crucial post, while Rajan Salvi of the Shiv Sena is the candidate of the opposition MVA alliance, which entered office on June 30.

After talks between the three allies, including the Nationalist Congress Party, the Congress, which had staked a claim to the position during the previous government, gave it up in favour of the Shiv Sena.

Congress leader Balasaheb Thorat said, "We have filed the nomination of Sena MLA Salvi and the decision was taken following consultations among the three parties."
