New Delhi: Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was visiting India recently. During this time he signed important agreements with India. Important among these agreements is the Waterways Agreement between India and Bangladesh. With the help of this agreement, goods will now be transported through waterways in states like Assam, Meghalaya and Tripura in the Northeast. This will not only save time, but will also reduce transportation expenses significantly. Union Shipping Minister Mansukh Mandavia said on Monday that SOP has been decided during Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's visit to India.

Accordingly, a total of eight routes have been identified through waterways, railways, roadways or multi-modal transport service. These include four waterway routes. The first route is from Mangala port in Chittagong to Akhala via Tripura to Agartala in Tripura. Secondly, from Chittagong Mangla port to Tamaki, Meghalaya's Davaki, the third route is via Mangala port to Sivakandi in Assam via Shivala and the fourth route is from Mangla port to Srimantpur in Tripura via Bibi market.

Let us tell you that if you want to send goods from Kolkata to Tripura via Chittagong in Bangladesh, then it will be much cheaper than the road or rail route. By road or rail route from Kolkata via Siliguri and Guwahati, the goods will go to Agartala while through water to Chittagong. This will give a boost to development activities in Northeast India.
