Mumbai: Shiv Sena leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut on Sunday waded into a controversy for mocking the Election Commission. Sanjay Raut while commenting about Model Code of Conduct (MCC) during elections said, “We are such people who don’t care about the law.” Addressing a gathering in Maharashtra's Mira-Bhayander, Raut said that he would say whatever he has in his heart regardless of the code of conduct in effect due to the Lok Sabha polls.

“We are such people who don’t care about the law. We will also take care of the code of conduct. If we don’t say what we have in heart, then it will make us uneasy. (Hum aise log hain, bhaad mein gaya kanoon, achar sanhita bhi hum dekh lenge. Jo baat hamare mann mein hai wo agar hum mann se bahar nahi nikalein to ghutan si hoti hai")” ANI quoted Shiv Sena leader as saying on Sunday.

Raut is not new to controversies but his latest remarks can be taken up by the Election Commission for action against him for contempt. What's shocking in Raut's statement is that fact that he does not only mocks the EC but also expresses utter disregard for the law. Sanjay Raut’s comments have come at a time when MCC is in force due to the Lok Sabha elections 2019.

The general elections are scheduled to be held in seven phases from 11 April to 19 May 2019 to constitute the 17th Lok Sabha. The counting of votes will be conducted on 23 May, and on the same day, the results will be declared.
