Mumbai: Controversy has arisen over the names of Shiv Sena candidate Deepali Syed of Kalav-Mumbra assembly constituency adjoining Mumbai. Jitendra Awhad, who is contesting on this Assembly seat on NCP ticket, has alleged that the Shiv Sena candidate is campaigning in Hindu and Muslim dominated areas with different names.

Deepali Bhonsle is the real name of Marathi film actress Deepali Syed. She got married a few days ago and named herself Sophia. For the Maharashtra Assembly elections, she has filed his nomination under the name Deepali Syed. Deepali has worked in more than 30 Marathi films. Apart from this, she has also been working in Marathi serials for almost two decades.

Jitendra Awhad has been an MLA from this seat twice and is now in the election field for the third time. This area of Awhad is considered to have a considerable hold. In such a situation, keeping in mind the Muslim population of this area, the Shiv Sena has tried to spoil the mathematics of Ahad by fielding Muslim candidates.  Shiv Sena has fielded a Muslim celebrity candidate to keep this seat in discussion.
