The defeat against India in the 2003 World Cup by former Pakistan fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar has been described as the worst match of his career. Pakistan was beaten by Pakistan by six wickets in a group level match of the World Cup at Centurion in South Africa on March 1, 2003. Pakistan scored 274 runs in the match which was achieved by India losing four wickets.
Akhtar recently posted a video on his YouTube channel in which he revealed that Pakistan had lost due to his fitness and poor captaincy of Waqar Yunus. He says, "The World Cup match played against India in 2003 in Centurion was the most disappointing match of my entire career. Despite the brilliant bowling, we could not defend the score of 274.'
According to Akhtar, one night before the match, he was struggling with his knee discomfort and had to take a 4-5 injection to the knee to play on the field. Akhtar further said his knee was flooded because of the injection, which was being repeatedly drained. He further said, "After our innings were over, I said that by batting first, we have reduced 30-40 runs so all the players were furious at me. My team-mates said that 273 runs are not enough then what is then.' although he admitted that I could not bowl because of my fitness. But when I bowled out Sachin Tendulkar in the last, I put Sachin a bouncer, then I thought I should have bowled this kind of ball to Sachin beforehand.
