Former UFC Lightweight Champion Conor McGregor shocked the world when he announced his retirement from Mixed Martial Arts. Just some days back McGregor had confirmed that he is in negotiations with the UFC about a fight in July. But today, Conor made a perturbing announcement that he has decided to hang up his gloves. McGregor said on Twitter “Hey guys quick announcement, I’ve decided to retire from the sport formally known as “Mixed Martial Art” today. I wish all my old colleagues well going forward in the competition. I now join my former partners on this venture, already in retirement. Proper Pina Coladas on me fellas!”.
However, McGregor’s tweet doesn’t make it clear whether he has officially retired from the sport. In classic McGregor style, he has kept his fans guessing regarding his future. This is not the first time that “The Notorious” has announced his retirement. Before UFC 200, McGregor had tweeted that he is not going to fight anymore. He had some dispute with the company regarding media obligations and decided to call it quits. But some days later, UFC announced that the Irishman is coming back and will fight Nate Diaz. The UFC 202 where McGregor came back and won against Diaz was the highest grossing PPV for the company at that time with a buy rate of 1.65 million.

Here it is to be noted that McGregor broke his own record at UFC 229, where he faced Khabib Nurmagomedov for the lightweight championship. He lost to Khabib in the fourth round, but the PPV grossed a record 2.4 million buys. McGregor was suspended from fighting by the Nevada Athletic Commission (NAC) for his involvement in the post-fight brawl that took place afterwards.
The 30-year-old has been in negotiation with the UFC over a fight in July. But there have been reports that UFC wanted McGregor to be in the co-main event, which he turned down. He later said that that he’d fight in the co-main event if he got shares in the UFC. So it looks like another disagreement with the company has led to the Irish superstar announcing his shock retirement. Or he might be doing it just to hype up his next fight of the year.
