FLORIDA: Five people were killed and eight injured in a shooting at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and one person is in custody, the local sheriff's office confirmed Friday.

A gunman opened fire on passengers in a baggage claim area at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International airport Friday, killing 5 people and injuring nine. The gunman was taken into custody.

Reports of shots fired at the airport were made around 12:55 pm, according to the Broward Sheriff's Office. Five people were killed, and eight have been hospitalized, the sheriff's office said.

The airport said there was an "ongoing incident" at the baggage claim area in Terminal 2. Hundreds of people were standing on the tarmac as dozens of police cars and ambulances rushed to the scene. Police received a call just before 1300 local time (1800 GMT) about shots fired at Terminal Drive.
