Beirut: During Friday's prayers, a shooting inside a mosque left at least one person dead and five others injured, according to a Lebanese security official. It was unclear why there had been a shooting in the eastern town of Bar Elias.

More gunfire later broke out between Lebanese troops and the shooting suspect, who was injured in the exchange, according to the state-run National News Agency.

According to regulations, a security official who spoke on the condition of anonymity said that all five of the injured people were Syrian nationals, including the man who was killed. Many Syrian refugees from the 12-year conflict in their country now reside in the town.

More than a million Syrian refugees reside in Lebanon, and since Lebanon's economic collapse started in October 2019, anti-Syrian sentiments have been on the rise. The country's ruling class's long history of corruption and poor management is the root cause of the decline. Six million people, or 75% of the population, reside in poverty.
