Ujjain: A multitude of devotees thronged the sacred Mahakaleshwar Temple in Madhya Pradesh's Ujjain district on Monday, marking the auspicious occasion of the second 'Shravan Somvar' and 'Somvati Amavasya.'

From the early hours of the day, people patiently lined up to seek the divine blessings of Lord Shiva at the esteemed Mahakal Temple. They eagerly participated in the special ritual of 'Bhasma Aarti' dedicated to Baba Mahakal.

The 'Bhasma Aarti,' an offering with sacred ashes, holds great significance in this revered place. It is performed during the sacred 'Brahma Muhurta,' which spans from approximately 3:30 to 5:30 in the morning.
Moreover, when the new moon day, known as 'Amavasya,' coincides with a Monday, it is known as the 'Somvati Amavasya,' a day of immense auspiciousness and good fortune. Devotees worship Lord Shiva and pay homage to their ancestors on this propitious day.
As per the temple's priest, Om Guru, the special Bhasma Aarti of Baba Mahakal was conducted on the occasion of Somvati Amavasya. Prior to the Bhasma Aarti, a ceremonial bathing of Baba Mahakal with water and Panchamrit Mahabhishek took place. The lord was anointed with milk, curd, ghee, honey, and various fruit juices. Subsequently, Baba Mahakal was adorned with Bhang and sandalwood, followed by the dressing in resplendent attire.

Furthermore, it is customary to take out Baba Mahakal's grand procession (sawari) on Mondays during the month of Shravan-Bhado. Therefore, today, at around 4 pm, the procession of Baba Mahakal will commence. It is believed that Baba Mahakal used to embark on these tours around the city to assess the well-being of his devotees. Eagerly waiting for hours on the roadside, devotees consider themselves blessed to catch a glimpse of Mahakal, as it is considered a divine encounter, the priest added.

'Sawan,' also known as 'Shravan,' is the fifth month of the Hindu lunar calendar and is regarded as one of the holiest months. Each Monday during this period is considered highly auspicious for fasting and seeking the blessings of Lord Shiva.

According to religious beliefs, the month of Shravan is considered Lord Shiva's favorite month. Worshipping Lord Shiva during this period is believed to grant immediate relief from troubles. This year, the month of Sawan will extend for 58 days, starting from July 4 and concluding on August 31.
