Maryada Purushottam Lord Shri Ram is inhabited in hearts and worshipped for ages. Shri Ram does not belong to any sect or religion, but he is a symbol of harmony. The world worships Shri Ram as a god. The controversy of Ram Janmabhoomi in India has also been in the limelight for centuries. It started in 1528 and ends in 2019 with a long court battle. Let's know what happened in all these years?

1528: Mosque built demolishing the temple?

Babur built a mosque in Ayodhya and it was called Babri Masjid because of Babar's construction of a mosque. Babur came to India in 1526, had reached Ayodhya by 1528. There is no information about what happened between 1528 to 1852.

1853: Communal riots

There were riots between the Hindu and Muslim sides. The Nirmohi Akhara claimed that Babur had destroyed the temple and built a mosque.

1859: The complex divided by Britishers

In 1859, this case took a new turn. The British government built a wall in front of the mosque and ordered that the Muslims would worship in the inner part of the mosque while the Hindus would pray in the outer part.

1885: Case reached court

In 1885, for the first time, this matter reached the district court. Mahant Raghubar Das had sought permission to build a Ram temple in the Babri Masjid complex in Faizabad court. But the court turned down his appeal.

1934: Riots took place again

Riots occurred again in 1934 and this time the walls and dome around the mosque were demolished in the riots. The British government had fixed it.

1949: Hindus reportedly installed an idol

The matter caught fire in 1949 for the first time after India's independence. During this time Hindus reportedly installed the idol of Lord Ram in the mosque. On this, there was a protest from the Muslims and they were stopped from offering Namaz in the mosque. Then the government locked the site.

1950: Permission to worship Shri Ram

Gopal Singh Visharad filed an appeal in the Faizabad court seeking permission to worship Lord Ram and during this time the mosque was also addressed as a 'structure'.

1959-61: Litigation on both sides

Nirmohi Akhara filed suit in 1959 for transfer of disputed site. A case was filed by the Uttar Pradesh Sunni Waqf Board on behalf of the Muslim side, claiming ownership over the Babri Masjid.

1984: Ram Janmabhoomi Mukti Samiti formed

The initiative of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad to free the birthplace of Rama and build a Ram temple intensified. Mahant Avaidyanath of Gorakhnath Dham formed the Ram Janmabhoomi Mukti Yagna Committee. Senior BJP leader LK Advani took over the reins.

February 1986: Unlocking order received, outrage among Muslims

The order was given by the District Magistrate to open the locks on the disputed land for the Hindus to pray. However, there was a protest from the Muslims and during this time Babri Masjid Sangharsh Samiti / Babri Masjid Action Committee was formed.

June 1989: Foundation stone of Sri Ram Temple by Vishwa Hindu Parishad

The Vishwa Hindu Parishad supported in this matter. Leader of Vishwa Hindu Parishad
Devkinandan Agarwal had sued the claim of the temple on behalf of Ram-Lalla. After this, in November 1989, the foundation stone of Shri Ram temple was laid at some distance from the mosque.

25 September 1990: Advani's Rath Yatra, arrested in Bihar

LK Advani, a senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party, had made up his mind for the Ram temple and he took a rath yatra from Somnath in Gujarat which was to end in Ayodhya. However, the then Bihar CM Lalu Prasad Yadav arrested Advani stopping the rath yatra. During this time, the Bharatiya Janata Party also withdrew its support from the government of the then Prime Minister VP Singh.

October 30, 1990: Mulayam Sarkar fired on workers

In 1990, Kar Sevaks hoisted the flag by climbing the mosque. The then CM of Uttar Pradesh Mulayam Singh Yadav had ordered the police to shoot, in which 5 Karsevaks had died.

6 December 1992: Riots across the country, Babri Masjid Demolished

On 30–31 October 1992, Karseva was announced in Dharmasand. 1992 was an important year in this case. During this time thousands of Karsevaks gathered in Ayodhya and the Babri Masjid was demolished. Hindus built a temporary Ram temple in its place. After this incident, there were riots across the country in which around 2000 people died during this period.

16 December 1992: Liberhan Commission formed

The Liberhan Commission was formed with regard to the case of demolition of the mosque. Then began the investigation into the case of demolition of the mosque under the leadership of Judge MS Liberhan.

1994: Case started in Prayagraj (Allahabad) High Court.

The case started in the Lucknow bench of Allahabad (now Prayagraj) High Court.

September 1997: 49 people convicted for mosque demolition

Nearly 5 years after the demolition of the mosque, 49 people were found guilty in this case. Some prominent leaders of BJP were also involved in this.

2001: Vishwa Hindu Parishad set date for construction of Ram temple

The Hindu of the country was in the mood to end the matter as soon as possible. In the one hand, there was the anniversary of the Babri demolition, on the other hand, during this time, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad said that in March 2002, the construction of Shri Ram Temple will be started in Ayodhya which further increased the tension.

2002: Godhra scandal

The Godhra incident took place in 2002. The Vishwa Hindu Parishad had fixed the date for the construction of the temple on 15 March 2002. Thousands of Hindus gathered for this. In February, the train boarded with Hindus which was returning from Ayodhya was attacked in Godhra and 58 workers lost their lives during this period.

March 15, 2002: Shiloh submitted to the government

There was an agreement between the Central Government and the Vishwa Hindu Parishad that the leaders of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad would hand over stones to the government outside the temple premises. Around 800 activists led by Ram Janmabhoomi Nyas president Mahant Paramahamsa Ramchandra Das and Vishwa Hindu Parishad executive president Ashok Singhal handed over stones to the government officials.

March-August 2003: Excavation begins below the disputed site

On the instructions of the High Court, the Archaeological Survey of India started digging in Ayodhya where it came out that evidence of similar remains from the temple has been seen under the mosque.

April-July 2004: Advani worships Rama in the temporary temple

Senior BJP leader Advani offered prayers at the temporary Ram temple in Ayodhya and said that the temple will definitely be built.

January-July 2005: Terrorist attack in Ayodhya, Advani in court

Advani had to go to court in the Babri Masjid demolition case. In July, the terrorists attacked the Ram Janmabhoomi complex in Ayodhya. One person died in it. While five terrorists were also killed.

June 30-November 2009: Report submitted by Liberhan Commission to PM Manmohan Singh

The Liberhan Commission was set up to investigate the Babri Masjid demolition. In 2009, the report was submitted to the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

30 September 2010: Court verdict, disputed land divided into three parts

In this case, a historic verdict was given by the Lucknow bench of Allahabad High Court. The court said that the disputed land should be divided into three parts. Where one part was given to the Ram temple, the other to the Sunni Waqf Board and the third part to the Nirmohi Akhara.

May 9, 2011: Allahabad High Court verdict of Supreme Court stayed

After a few months, this decision of the Allahabad High Court was stayed by the Supreme Court.

March-April 2017: Talks of resolving the dispute by mutual consent

In the first term of the Modi government, on March 21, the Supreme Court was asked to settle the dispute over centuries by mutual consent in this matter.

November-December 2017: Rizvi's statement, construction of Ram temple at the disputed site

On 8 November 2017, Shia Waqf Board Chairman Wasim Rizvi met Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and after that, he made a very big statement. Rizvi had said that a Ram temple should be built at the disputed site in Ayodhya, the mosque should be built away from there.

27 September 2018: New twist in the case, "Mosque is not a compulsory part of Islam"

The court's 1994 decision of Ismail Farooqui Union of India, stating that "Mosque is not a compulsory part of Islam", prohibited the sending of a large bench. It was said that the decision of civil litigation in the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid dispute in Ayodhya will be taken on the basis of evidence and the earlier decision will be applicable only in the case of land acquisition.

29 October 2018: Supreme Court issues case till January 2019

The Supreme Court deferred the matter until January 2019.

March 8, 2019: There were few months left for the decision on the matter. The matter was referred to the Supreme Court. The panel was ordered to end the proceedings within 8 weeks.

August 2019: Arbitration panel empty-handed

The report was submitted by the Arbitration Panel on 1 August. On this, the Supreme Court said on the next day i.e. on August 2 that the arbitration panel was not successful in finding a solution. After this, the daily hearing of the Ayodhya case started in the Supreme Court from 6 August.

16 October 2019: Hearing in Ayodhya case in Supreme Court was completed. The date for pronouncement of judgment is fixed on 9 November.

9 November 2019: Historical judgment of Supreme Court, Ram-Lalla's right over disputed land

This battle of nearly 5 centuries finally ended on 9 November 2019. The Supreme Court, while giving the verdict, considered the disputed land as the right of Ram-Lalla and asked to give 5 acres of land for the mosque to another place in Ayodhya itself.
