On Thursday, a case was filed against more than 50 celebrities who expressed concern by writing an open letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the issue of mob violence. Police said that a case against these 50 people has been registered on the orders of Chief Judicial Magistrate Suryakant Tiwari. Those writing the letter include historian Ramchandra Guha, film director Mani Ratnam, film director Anurag Kashyap, film director Shyam Benegal, actor Soumitra Chatterjee, actress Aparna Sen and singer Sudha Mudgal etc.

Recently a statement has come out in which director Shyam Benegal said that "this matter does not make any sense because the letter written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressing concern over the increasing incidents of mob violence was just an appeal and not a threat".

Apart from this, in his statement to the media, 'This letter was an appeal. Whatever the intention of the people, who are accepting the FIR and accusing us this way, these things make no sense. It was a letter appealing to the Prime Minister. It was not a threat or any other thing that would disturb the peace or create enmity among communities". It was written in the letter that, "Sadly, Jai Shri Ram" has become a provocative war today.
