New Delhi: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Tuesday resigned as Punjab Congress president after Navjot Singh Sidhu said Sidhu "could not accept" that a Dalit had been made the CM of the state. Sidhu today resigned as the chairman of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee. Assembly elections are proposed in the state early next year.

In a letter to interim Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Sidhu said he will continue to serve the party. He had become the head of the party's state unit in July this year. AAP spokesperson Saurabh Bhardwaj said in a press conference, "This shows that Navjot Singh Sidhu is against Dalits. The son of a poor man became cm... Sidhu could not stand it. It is very sad.''

In his letter to Sonia Gandhi, Sidhu said, "I cannot compromise on the future of Punjab and the welfare agenda of Punjab. "That is why I am resigning as the Chairman of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee, but I will continue to serve the Congress," he wrote.
