Chandigarh: The Punjab government's demand for a probe by a sitting high court judge into the murder of Congress leader and Punjabi singer Sidhu Musewala has been rejected. Sources said a letter has been written to the state government by the court in this regard. It is being told that in the letter, the High Court has told the government that it cannot give one of its judges for investigation.
It may be mentioned that 38 posts of judges are vacant in the High Court, while there are about 4.50 lakh cases pending there. There has been no immediate response from the State Government to this. On May 29, unidentified assailants had shot dead Musewala in Punjab's Mansa district. The Punjab government had on Monday announced the setting up of a judicial commission headed by a sitting high court judge following a demand by Mousewala's father Balkaur Singh. Punjab Principal Secretary (Home) Anurag Verma had also written a letter in this regard to the Registrar General of the High Court on May 30.
The letter said that the government is deeply concerned about this serious incident and wants to get to the root of the cause of the murder to bring the perpetrators of this heinous crime to justice. Anurag Verma had said, "I have been asked to conduct an inquiry in this regard under the leadership of a sitting judge. The request of the Hon'ble Chief Minister of Punjab has been directed to be conveyed to the Hon'ble Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court. However, the High Court rejected the demand of the Punjab government.
