Gangtok: Former Chief Minister of the state Pawan Kumar Chamling, who was on the path of development of Sikkim, is today celebrating his birthday. Chamling holds the record of being the longest CM of a state. Earlier this record was in the name of Jyoti Basu of the Communist Party. Chamling, the 69-year-old founding president of the Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF), served as the CM of Sikkim for 25 years (1994-2019). Chamling ruled for 25 years due to his development policies. Chamling was sworn in as the CM of Sikkim for the first time on 12 December 1994.

Born on September 22, 1950, in Yangang, South Sikkim, Chamling left school after studying till matriculation. He entered politics at the age of only 32. Chamling was the Minister of Industry and Public Relations in Narbahadur Bhandari's cabinet from 1989 to 1992. He formed the SDF in 1993 after a long political turmoil in Sikkim. Let us tell you that Jyoti Basu was the Chief Minister of West Bengal five times between June 21, 1977, and November 6, 2000. Basu died in 2010 at the age of 95.
