Sikkim gets Two new districts, the remaining four are renamed

Two additional districts have been added to Sikkim's total of districts. Soreng and Pakyong are the two new districts of Sikkim. Soreng was in the West Sikkim district, whereas Pakyong was in the East Sikkim district.

In this respect, the Sikkim government issued a gazette notification. On December 21, the two new districts of Soren and Pakyong were established. Pakyong, Rongli, and Rangpo are all subdivisions of the newly formed Pakyong district. Mangalbarey and Soreng will be the two subdivisions of the Soren district.As part of the Sikkim Reorganization of Districts Act 2021, two new districts have been established.

The state Assembly recently enacted the Sikkim Reorganization of Districts Act. The overall number of districts in Sikkim has increased to six with the formation of two additional districts. In the meanwhile, the names of the remaining four districts have been modified as well. While the district of North Sikkim has been renamed Mangan, the district of West Sikkim has been renamed Gyalshing.

East, on the other hand,Sikkim district has been renamed as Gangtok and South Sikkim as Namchi.

Gangtok district has been divided into two subdivisions – Gangtok and Rabdang.

Gyalshing will have three subdivisions – Gyalshing, Dentam and Yuksom.

Mangan district will have four subdivisions – Mangan, Kabi, Dzongu and Chungthang.

Lastly, Namchi district will have four subdivisions – Namchi, Jorethang, Ravangla and Yangang.
