SIKKIM: In a progressive move, the Sikkim government has announced a noteworthy change in its employee benefits. Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang revealed that government employees will now enjoy an extended one-year maternity leave and a compassionate one-month paternity leave. The purpose of this decision is to enable employees to prioritize their families and care for their children during these vital periods.

Addressing the esteemed gathering of the Sikkim State Civil Service Officers' Association (SSCSOA), CM Tamang emphasized the significance of this new provision and assured that necessary adjustments to service rules would be made to implement the benefits effectively. He further added that this compassionate approach would aid in fostering a supportive work environment where employees can attend to their family responsibilities without undue stress.

While specific details about the implementation are yet to be disclosed, the chief minister expressed that they would be notified soon, as reported by the esteemed news agency PTI.

Highlighting the critical role played by civil service officers in the state's administration and development, the chief minister extended his gratitude to the officers for their valuable contributions. The government has taken measures to streamline the promotion process, leading to an increase in the number of promotions, which further encourages the employees' dedication and hard work.

It's important to note that the Maternity Benefit Act of 1961 entitles working women to six months, or 26 weeks, of paid maternity leave. With this new development, the Sikkim government aims to provide enhanced support to its workforce and set an example for other states to follow.

With its relatively small population of around 6.32 lakh, Sikkim stands out as a pioneer in promoting progressive employee welfare policies.

While congratulating all the new IAS and SCS (Sikkim Civil Services) officers, the chief minister wished them a successful and fulfilling career ahead.

This move aligns with a broader national conversation about maternity leave policies in both public and private sectors. In India, there has been a growing call to extend the maternity leave from the existing six months to nine months, in line with recommendations made by NITI Aayog member VK Paul.

In 2017, the Parliament passed the Maternity Benefit (Amendment) Bill, 2016, which increased the paid maternity leave from 12 weeks to 26 weeks. The legislation enables new mothers to take fully paid leave for six months or 26 weeks for their first two children, and three months or 12 weeks for each subsequent child.

The FICCI Ladies Organisation (FLO) has emphasized the need for a collaborative effort between the private and public sectors to ensure the well-being of new mothers by extending maternity leave to nine months. A supportive and progressive approach toward maternity and paternity leave will undoubtedly contribute to a healthier work-life balance and greater employee satisfaction.
