Delhi is set to witness a silent protest today at Rajiv Chowk, organized by doctors from various institutions across the capital. The protest comes in response to the shocking rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata. Healthcare professionals are rallying to demand justice and improved safety measures for those in the medical field.
Participants in the protest include members from several prominent medical institutions, including AIIMS, RML, Safdarjung, Maulana Azad Medical College, Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital, Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hospital, Northern Railway Central Hospital, among others. These institutions have united in their call for accountability and safety, with plans to continue silent protests weekly until justice is served.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will be leading a dharna on Saturday, August 31, demanding the harshest punishment for those responsible for the heinous crime. Banerjee recently wrote to the Prime Minister, urging for stringent central legislation to address such grievous offenses. This marks her second appeal within a short span, highlighting the urgency of the situation.
The investigation into the case has seen significant developments. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, has been extensively questioned by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for over 140 hours. His involvement is being scrutinized, not only in connection to the tragic incident but also regarding financial misconduct at the hospital, leading to an FIR being filed against him and others.
Additionally, an audio recording has surfaced, allegedly of a conversation between the victim's parents and hospital staff. The recording, which went viral, has been dismissed by Kolkata Police, who refute claims that the parents were informed their daughter had died by suicide. The victim's father has distanced himself from the recording, denying responsibility for its circulation and questioning its authenticity.
The CBI has also conducted a second round of polygraph tests on Sandip Ghosh as part of their investigation. A similar test was performed on the arrested accused, Sanjay Roy, who remains under investigation.
