Beni Dayal wants to be a good storyteller

Malayalam singer Beni Dayal, who has several chartbusters in different languages to his credit, shares a special bond with Bengaluru. He tied up with the model Katherine Thangam in marriage a few years ago. No wonder, then, that he became a bit indifferent during his recent visit to Nama Uru for the Under 25 Summit. In a quick chat with us, he spoke about his absence from the Kannada music industry and his views on the country's emerging indie music scene. Of late, a lot of indie artists are gaining prominence in India's music industry. What do you think is the reason for this trend?

Right now, a lot of things are going on in the music field, allowing more and more artists to discover their talent. This is a welcome trend. In this way, the audience also has more options to choose from. Often, it is seen that unfamiliar and unconventional compositions are one of these. Well, it is not just about being a singer, but also about being a storyteller. The lyrics of a song are put together to tell a story. What matters is that you are able to convey that story, whether it is composed by someone else or yourself.

It is not about the tag of film music or indie music. What matters is whether people are able to connect with your music or not. In the current state of singers, whose work do you consider most different? Sid Sriram, Arijit Singh, Prateek Kuhar and Papon are my favorites. However, my last idol is Vishal Dadlani. He is not only a singer, but also a musician and a writer. As someone who is in the public eye, do you always feel pressured to be politically correct? Saying the right thing at the right time is a skill that comes from knowledge and experience. The older you are, the smarter you become. What I feel is that one should not overthink, and use discretion when making statements.
