New Delhi: Former Mauritius President and former PM Sir Anerood Jugnauth has passed away. The Government of India has decided to observe a day's state mourning on Saturday to express its respect for him. President Ram Nath Kovind and PM Narendra Modi have condoled the passing away of former Mauritius President Anerood Jugnauth.

PM Modi said in a tweet, "I spoke to Mauritius PM Pravind Jugnauth over phone and condoled the passing away of Sir Anerood Jugnauth. He will always be remembered as one of the biggest leaders of the Indo-Pacific region and as the principal architect of the special friendship between India and Mauritius". In a tweet, President Kovind wrote, "His historical contribution to India-Mauritius relations will always be remembered. Sir Anerood Jugnauth was a global and visionary leader. He was an extraordinary friend of Padma Vibhushan and India. His contribution will always be remembered".

Let us tell you that the ancestors of former Mauritius President Anerood Jugnauth lived in Athilpura village in Ballia district in Uttar Pradesh. According to villagers, his father Videsh Yadav and uncle Jhulai Yadav were transported to Mauritius by the British in 1873 for sugarcane cultivation by ship as indentured labourers. The family has a lot of influence in mauritius today. Jugnauth was awarded the Padma Vibhushan by the Government of India last year.
