Suva: The name of Sitiveni Rabuka as Fiji's next PM has been confirmed on Saturday (December 24). He also held the post of Fiji's PM about two decades ago. The 74-year-old Rabuka was nominated as prime minister after a one-vote victory at a meeting of Fiji's parliament in Suva. Rabuka, the chairman of the People's Alliance Party, has been made the PM after proving a majority in alliance with two other parties. He has taken the oath of the post of PM today i.e. on Saturday.

The tri-party alliance announced its intention to form the government on Tuesday with a total of 29 seats. PM Frank Bainimarama's Fiji First party has 26 seats. Bainimarama held the post of Fiji's PM for almost 16 years. Rabuka was elected prime minister on Saturday by 28 votes to 27 in a secret vote of MPs. These results show that one member of the new ruling coalition was against changing the prime minister. Rabuka was the country's PM from 1992 to 1999. He led two coups in 1987.

Rabuka's appointment after the election of a hung parliament has brought an end to the 10-day-long brawl. Fiji's Social Democratic Liberal Party (SDLP) voted on Friday to form a coalition with Rabuka's People's Alliance and the National Federation Party. The coalition was formed to oust Fiji First's Frank Bainimarama, who has led the Pacific island nation since a 2006 coup.
