Ujjain: Numerous devotees flocked to the Mahakaleshwar temple in Madhya Pradesh's Ujjain district, drawn by the sixth 'Shravan Somvar' to offer their prayers. In the early hours of the morning, devotees formed queues to seek the blessings of Lord Shiva at the temple and also partook in the special 'Bhasma Aarti' ceremony dedicated to Baba Mahakal.
The 'Bhasma Aarti,' a renowned ritual here, takes place during the 'Brahma Muhurta' between approximately 3:30 and 5:30 in the morning. According to the temple's priest, Mahesh Sharma, prior to the Bhasma Aarti, Baba Mahakal underwent a sacred bath with water and Panchamrit Mahabhishek. This involved anointing the deity with a mixture of milk, curd, ghee, honey, and fruit juices.
Following the ablutions, Baba Mahakal was adorned with Bhang and sandalwood, and dressed in elegant attire. Subsequently, the Bhasma Aarti commenced, accompanied by the rhythmic beats of drums and the resonant sounds of conch shells.
'Sawan,' also known as 'Shravan,' corresponds to the fifth month of the Hindu lunar calendar and holds profound religious significance. Each Monday during this month is deemed an exceptionally auspicious period for fasting and seeking the blessings of Lord Shiva. As per religious convictions, the month of Shravan is particularly dear to Lord Shiva. Worshiping the deity during this period is believed to provide immediate relief from hardships.
This year, the Shravan month spans 59 days, beginning on July 4 and concluding on August 31. In addition, it is customary to conduct Baba Mahakal's 'sawari' (procession) every Monday in the Shravan-Bhado months. Consequently, an evening procession for Baba Mahakal is also planned for today. It is believed that Baba Mahakal embarks on this tour of the city to gauge the well-being of the public. Devotees eagerly wait along the roadside for hours, considering themselves fortunate to catch a glimpse of Mahakal during the procession.
