SEOUL: South Korea and the United States  plan to begin preliminary military drills next week ahead of their major combined exercise later this month, informed sources said on Tuesday.

In preparation for the Ulchi Freedom Shield (UFS) exercise, which is scheduled to take place from August 22–September 1, the allies will start their four-day crisis management exercises on Tuesday, as per reprots.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff of South Korea are in charge of the drills, which are intended to simulate potential pre-war crisis scenarios.

They are a type of computer-based training that simulates combat scenarios developed by the allies.
The UFS is divided into two sections: one that focuses on thwarting attacks and defending the area around Seoul, and the other that deals with counterattack operations.

The forthcoming drill will take place as the allies work to bolster their joint defence through initiatives including enhancing and promoting training programmes due to worries that the North may increase tensions by carrying out a nuclear test or other provocative actions.
