According to a report, Surat is considered to be the biggest diamond trading stronghold in Gujarat. According to businessmen here, the situation had started to be very difficult since November 2016. The demonetization in November 2016, followed by GST in July 2017 and the PNB scam by Nirav Modi, Mehul Choksi in February 2018, have completely broken the backbone of the business. Apart from Surat, Amreli and Bhavnagar also have diamond cutting and polishing business. The demand for Indian diamonds is declining all over the world.

On the other hand, the four months of the financial year have seen a decline of 15.11 percent over the beginning of the financial year as compared to the previous year. There are 20 lakh people involved in the diamond business, out of which eight lakh are only diamond cutting and polishing. There is a terrible pressure on the Government to deal with this recession.
